Airservices Australia is seeking stakeholder feedback on a proposal to extend a Temporary Restricted Area (TRA) in use during the Avalon Airshow (3-5 March 2023).
Avalon Airshow between 3-5 March 2023. An extension to R979A to the west is required to contain high performing aircraft and airshow formations. The SUP is usually effective from the Tuesday prior to the airshow until the following Wednesday. R979A is activated by NOTAM.
Extension of TRA activated during Avalon Airshow for greater containment of participating aircraft.
Restricted area R979A (SFC to 1500') is activated during periods of activity for the Avalon Airshow and follows the dimensions of the YMAV CTR with an 8NM YMAV ARP arc intersected by tangentials to the east and west.
Currently some high performing aircraft and airshow formations require a 5nm radius and while performing displays to the west of the aerodrome are not able to be contained within the airspace.
The updated airspace would better contain large/high performance aircraft within the restricted area and CTA while performing displays, and provide a net safety benefit to those aircraft around the fringes of the TRA, ensuring display aircraft do not go outside controlled airspace (OCTA) while performing manoeuvres. This ensures greater separation and traffic management between participating and non-participating aircraft.
