The Airspace Change Proposal (ACP) varies from previous requests to include an extension of the “8NM AV ARP” ring to the west for R979A.

    The issue

The airspace surrounding Avalon will become extremely congested and a high degree of airmanship and situational awareness will be required by pilots. Temporary Restricted Areas (TRA) will be declared and specific air traffic services and procedures defined.

Transit flights through the restricted areas will not normally be permitted. Emergency traffic requiring operations in the restricted areas will be processed according to their priority requirements. All operations to Avalon (YMAV) during this period require prior permission from AMDA Foundation Limited. All helicopter operations are subject to specific requirements.

During the TRA activation, Avalon Tower will be active daily from 0545 until 2300 (local time). For operations outside tower hours, including emergency operations, the pilot must contact AMDA Aircraft Operations on +61 (0)467 579 595 to arrange activation of YMAV tower. Flight Plan notification is not sufficient.

    Purpose

The Australian International Airshow will be held at Avalon Airport, Victoria, from Monday 20 February 2023 to Monday 6 March 2023. The use of airspace, aerodrome and facilities vary from those published in Aeronautical Information Publication (AIP) missed approach procedures and En Route Supplement Australia.

    • R979A, B, and C, will be active from 1200 20 February 2023 until 1800 6 March 2023 (local time)
    • Class D procedures as per AIP ENR 1.1 section 2.2.7 apply
    • Helicopter Operations within the Helicopter Access Corridor (HAC) require an Air Traffic Control Clearance
    • The dimensions of R979A (SFC-1500) have changed. Refer to new charts in appendix 2 of the AIP SUP when operating close to Avalon. Aircraft transiting to the west of Avalon should be careful not to infringe this airspace
    • Avalon East airfield will not be operational in 2023
    • All flights to Avalon Airport require approval.
