The Western Sydney International (WSI) airspace change will increase pilot-to-ATC and ATC-to-ATC communication (SYD TCU), clearance, and coordination requirements. A different approach to plan, balance, and manage traffic at Bankstown aerodrome (YSBK) is needed to maintain safety and manage operational complexity effectively.
To manage flow and workload of operations through the new airspace, we need to introduce spacing for visual flight rules (VFR) operations departing the YSBK control zone (CTR) (can be triggered by traffic loading, ATC staffing, weather, significant event) and required coordination.
Airservices currently utilises an online air work booking system at other airports around Australia. We have proposed to implement the use of this tool at YSBK to better anticipate and show traffic demand throughout the day.
Implementation of this proposal would require operators to nominate a 3-minute departure slot for their VFR departures via the Airservices air work booking system. YSBK ATC will coordinate VFR departures in alignment with the nominated slots. This may improve YSBK operators' awareness, avoid peaks, and reduce likelihood of holding.
