To advise members of an upgrade to the Darwin (Berrimah) radar.
The Berrimah weather radar, the main radar for Darwin, is set to undergo a significant upgrade to provide the local community and industry with more reliable and up-to-date weather information. To make the changes, the radar will be offline for up to 8 weeks.
During this time, the Darwin Airport weather radar will provide images and observations to the community. Katherine weather radar will also be available.
From Thursday 21 July 2022, subject to any unforeseen delays, the Bureau of Meteorology will commence installation of a new digital receiver and control system for the Berrimah weather radar.
The upgraded radar system will improve the tracking of winds, quality of rainfall images and predictions for severe storms.
Warnings and forecasts will not be impacted and will continue to be published on the Bureau's website bom.gov.au and on the BOM Weather app. The Bureau's forecasts and warnings are informed by observations from a range of assets including other available radars, satellites, upper atmosphere monitoring and automatic weather stations.
During the outage period, those seeking situational awareness of weather can use a range of alternative sources.
This radar upgrade is part of the Bureau's ongoing work to enhance and improve the Australian radar and observation network.
The Darwin (Berrimah) and Darwin Airport radars are part of a comprehensive weather observation network of more than 11,000 assets including satellites, upper atmosphere monitoring, automatic weather stations, ocean buoys and flood warning networks.
