The competition has run for the last 25 years. Pilots will launch from Mt. Borah and score on how many kilometres they fly in a straight line.
The competition will be held over 3 days from 28th – 31st March at Manilla with pilots launching from Mt Borah. There will be approximately 160 participating paraglider pilots in the competition. Each day will be open distance and direction with pilots scoring on how many kilometres they fly in a straight line from take-off to landing.
The Paragliding State of Origin is an entry level paragliding competition aimed at the novice or intermediate XC pilot wishing to experience a competition in a safe and friendly atmosphere. The competition is held at Manilla at Easter. This consultation is to make the flying community aware of the competition and provide a communication channel for local aviation operators and stakeholders.
The Paragliding State of Origin is an entry level competition aimed at the novice or intermediate paraglider pilot wishing to experience a competition in a safe and friendly atmosphere. The competition will be held over 3 days from 28 to 31 March with approximately 160 participating pilots.
It is a group-based event where experienced “crew chiefs” lead a crew of 4 other pilots. Each crew is made up of a minimum of one advanced pilot and 2 novice pilots. Crews fly together and score together with a handicap system that rewards low airtime pilots with distance multipliers.
Pilots will launch from Mt. Borah and intermittently climb in thermals in Class E & G airspace to 10,000ft amsl. Each day will be open distance and direction with pilots scoring on how many kilometres they fly in a straight line from take-off to landing. Areas within 10nm of aerodromes is out of bounds for this competition.
The 2024 Paragliding State of origin event area is 50NM radius from Mt Borah (30°40’27.00”S 150°36’13.20”E) excluding controlled airspace (Class C / D) and airspace within 10NM of any certified aerodrome within the event area.
