The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) is seeking feedback on offshore beyond visual line-of-sight (BVLOS) drone operations around Gladstone, Queensland.

    The issue

    • BVLOS drone operations
    • day and night operations
    • surface – 8000 feet above mean sea level, fixed wing uncrewed aircraft systems (UAS) (up to 40kg)
    • operations are planned to occur from September to November 2023
    • seeking input from local airspace users on deconfliction arrangements or safety requirements.

    Purpose

The DCCEEW will be conducting environmental studies utilising UAS.

DCCEEW aims to conduct environmental studies utilising UAS within the identified offshore area located East-North-East of Gladstone, Queensland - see Figure 1 for proposed area of operations. In accordance with Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) approval, deconfliction requirements will be adhered to, including the use of NOTAMs, monitoring of the relevant aviation radio frequencies, and, if required, the use of electronic conspicuity devices.

This information is provided as part of the initial Stakeholder Engagement Plan, to provide an opportunity for stakeholders to raise any safety concerns on the information provided. Additional stakeholder engagement will be conducted with air operators more directly affected by this operation.
