The Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) is planning Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) drone operations in Kakadu National Park (northern end).

    The issue

    • BVLOS drone operations
    • day operations from surface – 6000 feet above mean sea level (AMSL), using fixed wing uncrewed aircraft systems (UAS) (36kg)
    • operations are planned to commence mid-June through to August
    • seeking input from local airspace users on deconfliction arrangements or safety requirements.

    Purpose

The DCCEEW will be conducting aerial mapping for the monitoring of wildlife within Kakadu National Park utilising UAS.

The DCCEEW aims to conduct aerial mapping operations, utilising UAS, within three identified areas located at the northern end of Kakadu National Park - see Figure 1 for proposed area of operations.

In accordance with CASA approval, deconfliction requirements will be adhered to, including the use of NOTAMs, monitoring of the relevant aviation radio frequencies, and, if required, the use of electronic conspicuity devices.

This information is provided as part of the initial Stakeholder Engagement Plan, to provide an opportunity for stakeholders to raise any safety concerns on the information provided. Additional stakeholder engagement will be conducted with air operators more directly affected by this operation.
