Airservices Australia is proposing to decommission the Gunnedah and Quirindi Non-Directional Beacons (NDBs).

    The issue

Decommissioning of these NDBs will result in withdrawal of associated instrument flight procedures and may impact some instrument flight training.

    Purpose

To consult aviation industry stakeholders in relation to the proposed decommissioning of Gunnedah and Quirindi NDBs.

The Gunnedah and Quirindi NDBs have reached the end of economic life. They do not form part of Australia’s Backup Navigation Network (BNN) and have only been retained previously for Department of Defence (Defence) flight training purposes, which is no longer occurring at these locations.

Decommissioning of these NDBs will result in the following changes to the Aeronautical Information Package (AIP):

    • removal of the Quirindi (YQDI) NDB Approach procedure
    • removal of Gunneddah (YGDH) NDB Approach and Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) Arrival procedures
    • minor change to ATS routes W174, W207, W359, W487, W572, W702, W715 and W760 (to replace the NDBs with a GNSS waypoint)
    • other minor changes to AIP documentation and charts to remove reference to the aid.
