The Upper Hunter Shire Council are proposing that Airservices Australia decommission the Scone (SCO) Non-Directional Beacon (NDB) within the next 6-12 months.

    The issue

The Upper Hunter Shire Council are proposing that Airservices Australia decommission the SCO NDB within the next 6-12 months.

Decommissioning of the SCO NDB will allow the Upper Hunter Shire Council to reclaim the land currently maintained by Airservices for the navigation aid’s infrastructure, and to realise their major development plans for the Scone Airport precinct.

SCO NDB is currently part of Australia’s Backup Navigation Network (BNN); however, its removal will not adversely impact the important function of the BNN, as adequate coverage is provided by other navaids in the region.

    Purpose

Airservices, in consultation with CASA, is seeking feedback from aircraft operators to understand if and how the SCO NDB is being utilised, for example, for flight training purposes.

Decommissioning of the SCO NDB will result in the following changes to the Aeronautical information Package (AIP):

    • removal of the YSCO NDB Approach procedure
    • minor change to ATS routes H12, H99, UH201, UH209, W183, W365, W551, W702 (to replace the NDB with a GNSS waypoint)
    • other minor changes to charts and documentation to remove reference to the navaid. Airservices, in consultation with CASA, is seeking feedback from aircraft operators to understand if and how the SCO NDB is being utilised, for example, for flight training purposes.
