This consultation is to seek feedback on the proposed establishment of a temporary danger area (TDA) in support of the Canungra Spandicup paragliding competition.
The organiser of the Canungra Spandicup paragliding competition, with support from the Canungra hang gliding club and the sports aviation federation of Australia (SAFA), will be running the competition from Saturday 4 October 2025 - Saturday 11 October 2025. To support this, SAFA is applying for the establishment of a TDA in class G airspace over the main area of competition operations for the duration of the competition, in support of an application for exemption from carriage and use of airband radios by competitors.
The proposed TDA will be in place for the duration of the Canungra Spandicup paragliding competition, in class G airspace, with up to 80 pilots who will be competing.
The Canungra Spandicup 2025 is a World air sports federation (FAI) sanctioned, paragliding cross-country racing competition. The competition will run from 9:00 AEST on Saturday 4 October until 17:00 AEST on Sunday 11 October 2025.
A maximum of 80 paraglider aircraft will be competing, flying daily tasks from 09:00 AEST to 17:00 AEST.
The task will be confined to the volume of class G airspace enclosed by the area outlined in the attached diagram.
In addition to the TDA, SAFA have applied for a notice to airmen (NOTAM) and an exemption for competing pilots from the carriage and use of very high frequency (VHF) radio communications whilst flying. Properly authorised ground-based operators will monitor and conduct VHF communications and relay information to pilots via UHF radio transmissions.
