Elements of the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) will be conducting Exercise ‘DIAMOND SPEAR 2026’ between 02 - 15 May 2026.

    The issue

    • Activation of three Temporary Military Operating Areas (TMOAs) in addition to permanent Amberley and Williamtown Special Use Airspace (SUA) off the NSW/South Qld coast.
    • Proposed TMOA are a reduction on previously utilised TMOA ‘SHACKLE A’, TMOA ‘SHACKLE B’ and TMOA ‘SHACKLE C’.
    • Multiple air routes affected. Diversion routes to be published in the Aeronautical Information Publication Supplement (AIP SUP).
    • Access to TMOA is limited to exercise participants, aircraft with a declared emergency, or aircraft undertaking operations in the preservation of life and/or property.

    Purpose

The Joint Airspace Control Cell (JACC) requests feedback on proposed TMOAs and procedures for Exercise "DIAMOND SPEAR" 2026.

    Proposal

Three TMOAs are proposed to support exercise operations. Indicative timings are listed in Table 1, with specific activation timings to be promulgated by AIP SUP and notice to airmen (NOTAM).

Table 1. Planned activation timings for Exercise Airspace 02 – 15 May 2026

    Airspace Date  Time
    TMOA ‘LANCE A’  02 – 15 May 2026 NOTAM
    TMOA ‘LANCE B’ 02 – 15 May 2026 NOTAM
    TMOA ‘LANCE C’ 02 – 15 May 2026 NOTAM

This airspace proposal has a significant effect on ATS routes to the east of Sydney and Brisbane and offshore areas. Diversion routing will be required during the periods of MILEX airspace activation. Diversion routes shall be developed by Airservices Australia, and shall be published in the AIP SUP.

    Access to Exercise Airspace

During NOTAM activation periods, access to Exercise Airspace by non-exercise aircraft will not be available except in cases of a declared emergency, radio failure or participating in activities for the preservation of life and property (SAR, MED, POL or FFR).
