Two Temporary Restricted Areas (TRAs) are proposed above Sydney Harbour to accommodate an Air Force flying display to ensure the safety of non-participant aircraft.

    The issue

    • 2 TRAs that replicate airspace lateral limits previously used for Australia Day and His Majesty The King's visit
    • Vertical limits have been chosen to reduce impost on the aviation community
    • Victor 1 visual flight rules (VFR) coastal route remains unaffected
    • R405A and R405B will be deactive when the proposed TRAs are active
    • Conditional status of TRAs will be RA3

    Purpose

The Australian Defence Force (ADF) Joint Airspace Control Cell (JACC) requests feedback on proposed TRAs enabling Defence to conduct flying displays for the International Fleet Review within the Sydney Basin.

    Proposal

This event requires segregated airspace to enable flypast priority (time-on-target) and account for high-speed and abrupt manoeuvres associated with an aerobatic display. Due to this requirement, the use of 2 TRAs is proposed to enable unimpeded access for supporting assets and to ensure the safety of non-participant aircraft.

The proposed TRAs will encompass part of R405A and the entirety of R405B and extend to the east to include a portion of Class G airspace adjacent to the Victor 1 VFR coastal route. These lateral dimensions are consistent with the TRA design used to support Australia Day and His Majesty The King's visit. R405A and R405B will be deactivated during the activation of the proposed TRAs.

Vertical Limits for each TRA are listed below.

The TRAs are expected to be active for a total period of 30 minutes on 21 March 2026. All timings will be confirmed through publication of an Aeronautical Information Publication Supplement (AIP SUP).

Special transit arrangements will be in place for emergency medical services (EMS) and police helicopters.
