To advise members and aviation stakeholders about the upcoming Canungra Cup Paragliding competition.

    The issue

    • The Event will run from 22 October - 29 October 2022
    • The general area of operation is located within 170 km radius west of Mount Tamborine Hang Gliding area but excludes R634A and B, Amberley Military CTR and R625B, C, D.
    • Gliders will operate in Class G airspace and in Temporary Restricted Areas (TRA) that will be created in some portions of Class C airspace for the purpose of safely operating the competitions.

    Purpose

Annually, the CHGC conducts the Canungra Cup (Paragliders).

This competition is internationally recognised competitions that draw competitors from around the world.
The event involves up to 85 gliders racing around a course with the aim to achieve the fastest time to the designated goal. The course for each day is determined in the morning by a task committee after assessing forecast weather conditions, with some
days not deemed suitable for flying.

Due to the congregation of large numbers of gliders around the launch sites and start gates, there is a safety benefit to allowing gliders access to higher levels (inside controlled airspace) to help create additional vertical spacing between gliders.

In 2017 CHGC obtained an Instrument (EX142/17) from CASA that authorises competitors in these events to operate in areas of controlled airspace without the usual requirements for carriage of VHF radio and using the pilot licensing appropriate to gliders. Due to the resounding success of this instrument it was subsequently renewed in 2021 under Instrument EX124/21 .

Temporary Restricted Areas The Civil Aviation Safety Authority Office of Airspace Regulation (OAR) will designate the areas as Temporary Restricted Areas when published by NOTAM, with Brisbane Centre as the administering authority.

Within the TRAs during the period of cleared gliding activity:

    • Air Traffic Control (ATC) service not provided to participating aircraft
    • Directed traffic information service will not be provided to or about participating aircraft
    • ATC clearance is not required by individual participating aircraft
    • SAR alerting service and flight information service will not be provided to participating aircraft
    • Airways clearance through the TRA is not available to non-participating aircraft.
