Multiple Temporary Restricted Areas (TRAs) are proposed in the vicinity of Surfers Paradise Beach to ensure safe separation of the airshow display from other aircraft.

    The issue

    • TRAs to separate airshow display aircraft from other aircraft
    • TRAs may be activated up to 30 minutes prior to practice and display times
    • Impact to other operations in Brisbane and Gold Coast airspace, including at Gold Coast
(YBCG), Southport (YSPT) and Sea World Heliport (YSWD)
    • Only change from previous years is the increased ceiling of the 3 nautical mile (NM) TRA from 5000’ to
      9000’

    Purpose

To advise airspace users of the intention of putting TRAs in place around Surfers Paradise during display times of the Pacific Airshow 2026.

    Proposal

    OVERVIEW

The annual Pacific Airshow is being operated in coordination with the City of Gold Coast, Major Events Gold Coast, Destination Gold Coast, Tourism and Events Queensland, the Queensland government, and the Australian Defence force, and in accordance with the Queensland Major Events Act.

Multiple TRAs are proposed in the vicinity of Surfers Paradise Beach to ensure safe separation of airshow display aircraft from other aircraft.

    PROPOSAL

Details of the proposed TRAs, as well as illustrations, are provided below (note that these are subject to change, refer to
the Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) and Aeronautical Information Publication Supplement (AIP SUP) for finalised dimensions). The TRAs will extend at most 5NM from the waterfront of Surfers Paradise beach, over both water and land. The proposed TRAs are centred at Cavill Ave (280006S 1532617E) with a maximum upper limit of FL160.

The TRAs will only be activated during practice and display times as follows (subject to change, refer to NOTAMs for finalised timings):

Practice: Thursday 13 August, 1030-1530 local
Displays: Friday 14 August, Saturday 15 August, and Sunday 16 August, 1000-1700 local daily

A universal communications (UNICOM) service will operate on very high frequency (VHF) frequency 119.0MHz during TRA activation periods, including buffer periods before and after the activation times to assist in traffic separation. An Airservices representative will also be on-site during TRA activation periods. Priority will be given to passenger transport operations, as well as to any aircraft with a declared emergency or operating in the preservation of life or property (medivac, fire and flood recovery, police, search and rescue). Full details of arrangements and procedures, including any local traffic restrictions in Brisbane and Gold
Coast airspace, will be published via AIP SUP prior to the event.

Note: The availability of some instrument flight procedures (IFPs) at YBCG will be impacted during TRA activation. Airservices will publish guidance separately as to which IFPs will be impacted and when, as well as some temporary IFPs that have been specifically developed, via AIP SUP prior to the event. Airservices states that PJE, AWK and SVY work in the area may be impacted during TRA activation due workload.

Pacific Airshow is being operated in coordination with the City of Gold Coast, Major Events Gold Coast, Destination Gold Coast, Tourism and Events Queensland, the Queensland government, and the Australian Defence force, and in accordance with the Queensland Major Events Act.
