TRA 'WOODY' is requested as an alternative to the permanent YBSG CTR in order to reduce the impact upon civil operators into Weipa Aerodrome (YBWP).

    The issue

TRA ‘WOODY’ is proposed for the period 03 – 19 July 2026 inclusive, with activation of up to 16 hours per day to cater for military exercise activities occurring at RAAF Base Scherger (YBSG).

The airspace and its procedures have been designed with the following outcomes in mind:

    • Allow for class G access to YBWP aerodrome.
      • Reduce the impact upon civil aviation operations in the area by only utilising airspace essential for the activity.
      • Avoiding the approach and departure paths of YBWP aerodrome.
      • Allowing military access to higher level restricted areas in the YBSG area.
      • Build upon feedback that was received during activations of previous TRA ‘SCHERGER’.

    Purpose

Defence is seeking feedback on a Temporary Restricted Area (TRA) at RAAF Base Scherger.

    Proposal

TRA ‘WOODY’ is proposed for the period 03 – 19 July 2026 inclusive, with activation of up to 16 hours per day to cater for military exercise activities occurring at RAAF Base Scherger (YBSG). This airspace is requested as an alternative to the extant Scherger CTR in order to reduce the impact upon civil operators into Weipa Aerodrome (YBWP) as well as protect civil airspace users from the military activities planned in the vicinity of YBSG.

TRA ‘WOODY’ has been designed to remain clear of all IFP into YBWP, confirmed by AsA IFP Design.

While the use of the extant RAAF Scherger CTR is available for activation, this option is not preferred due to the additional control required over the airspace surrounding YBWP.
